Between the Recession and Napsterizing books, the sales of new books have plummeted. Even Dan Brown's THE LOST SYMBOL, the much-anticipated heir to his phantasmagoric THE DAVINCI CODE, and Teddy Kennedy's memorable last words in TRUE COMPASS have not garnered the sales that publishers and bookstores hoped for.
As recession-pained consumers cut corners everywhere and such internet file storage sites as RapidShare, Megaupload, and Hotfile spew ebooks without the copyright holder's say so. piracy has become the name of the game.
Meantime, some readers are waiting for Christmas when it's always better to receive. Since everyone is hoping for the best--and waiting for paperback releases, it's a good idea to pick and choose carefully, ignore big bombshells in favor of smaller grenades that might be better reading, go to the library, and drop hints loudly and unsubtley to anyone who's looking for gift suggestions that YOU might like. And even treasure.
It would be nice if Christmas of 2009 could be the book-lovers' celebration of the century. Don't delay. Start hinting now.
