Tom Wayne, owner of Propero's Books in Kansas City, is burning 20,000 used books from his warehouse BECAUSE HE CAN'T GIVE THEM AWAY. Nobody wants them. Not libraries. Not other bookstores. Especially, not readers. Burning the books is Wayne's way of protesting the decline of thought and the loss of reading support in the United States.
The Kansas City Fire Department put out the first fire because it said Wayne didn't have a burning permit. He's getting a permit and is planning monthly book burnings until the 20,000 are nothing but ashes.
Like THE BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES, the world of Ipods, computers, television--especially ESPN have contributed to burning books and the loss of meaning of the printed word in this nation. Newspapers are cutting their book reviewers and books are burning up. WHERE ARE WE GOING AND WHERE WILL WE END UP??
